I couldn't really escape being an artist of some sort. In addition
to their other talents, everyone in my family does some sort of
visual art. There was never a time when I was not surrounded by
tools of the trade--clays and inks, paints and pencils, knives and
yarns, boards and papers. I picked them up the way other children
pick up toys.
I've never seen just being able to draw things
as enough. In work I do for myself, I often find myself posing questions,
sometimes on the level of vignette fiction: I ask a picture to evoke
something more than just the image at hand.
